Knit over dress, dress becomes a skirt

Pull a crewneck sweater over a dress and let the skirt fall below. The bodice disappears, the print becomes a skirt, and nobody can tell it's the same strapless printed dress you wore to a barbecue in July.

This works best when the dress skirt has some volume. On a pencil silhouette, front-tuck the sweater hem instead.

Add sleeves underneath

A fitted long-sleeve tee or thin turtleneck under a sleeveless dress adds warmth without changing the shape. Match it to the darkest color in the print and it reads as one garment.

Finish with the right outer layer

A jacket that ends at the waist keeps a full skirt looking full. A jacket that ends mid-thigh cuts the dress in half. For a midi, go cropped denim or long โ€” never in between.

Boots close the deal. A platform stiletto for evening, a lace-up for daytime.
