Checked Everything: How to Wear Plaid Without Looking Like a Tablecloth

A large check on a petite frame swallows the outline; a micro check on a tall frame disappears into texture. Hold the garment at arm's length — if you can't count the squares across your torso in a second, it's too small for you.

A two-color check is a neutral and behaves like one. A four-color check is a statement and needs the rest of the outfit to shut up completely. Most plaid regret comes from treating the second kind like the first.

The hooded flannel shacket is the two-color-ish workhorse: enough pattern to be interesting, tame enough to wear weekly.

Matching sets are the exception and they only work when it's the identical fabric. Otherwise, plaid jacket with solid everything, or plaid skirt with solid everything. Add texture — leather, knit, suede — rather than a second pattern.
