Thin to thick, inside to out

Each layer should be slightly heavier and slightly longer than the one beneath it. When a chunky knit sits under a thin jacket, the jacket strains and every lump shows. Reverse it and the silhouette stays clean.

Stagger the hems on purpose

Three layers ending at the same point creates one thick horizontal band across your hips. Let a shirt hem peek below a sweater, and the jacket end somewhere different again. The eye reads vertical lines instead of one block.

A cropped denim shirt over a longer tee is the easiest version of this.

Leave the wrists free

Push sleeves up to the forearm on at least one layer. Exposed wrists keep the whole outfit from looking swallowed, and they give jewelry โ€” a bangle watch set, a paperclip bracelet โ€” somewhere to live.
