How to Switch Your Skincare from Summer to Fall Without Breaking Out
August 15, 2026 ยท 5 min read

Change one product a week, not five in a day
Skin adapts to a routine over about four weeks. Replacing your cleanser, serum, moisturizer and exfoliant in the same weekend gives you no way to identify which one caused the reaction that follows.
Start with moisturizer, because that's the one the weather actually broke. A richer cream like It Cosmetics Confidence in a Cream or Tula's 24-7 day and night cream replaces a summer gel with almost no adjustment period.
Keep the sunscreen. All of it. Forever.
UVA levels barely dip in October, and they pass straight through window glass. If you drop SPF when the tan fades, you undo a summer of pigment work in about six weeks.
A weightless formula makes it survivable under makeup โ Supergoop Unseen SPF 50 has no white cast and doubles as a primer, which is the entire reason people actually reapply it.
Add hydration before you add actives
Cooler air pulls water out of the skin barrier, and a compromised barrier reacts badly to retinol, acids and vitamin C. Spend two weeks building hydration first with a mask or an overnight treatment โ the PDRN caffeine wrapping mask is the low-effort version.
Then reintroduce your actives at half the frequency you used in July. A night cream buffers the sting while your skin recalibrates.
