Soaking wet, then damp, then dry

Leave-in conditioner goes on hair that's still dripping — it distributes evenly and locks in the water. Cream or gel goes on damp hair to set the shape. Oil goes on dry hair, at the ends only, once everything else has finished.

Apply oil to wet hair and it seals water out rather than in, which is why some people's air-dried hair never quite dries soft.

The cold-weather problem is protein, not moisture

Dry air plus hats plus static equals breakage, and breakage looks like frizz. A healing oil and styling cream set addresses both sides, and a volumizing shampoo and conditioner keeps roots from collapsing under the extra product weight.

Scalp first

Autumn shedding is real and mostly seasonal, but a dry scalp makes it worse. A weekly treatment with Haitian black castor oil — or the lighter version for fine hair — is the low-cost version of a salon treatment.
